Faith Formation

St. John--Hubbells offers opportunities for people of all ages to learn more about God, grow as a follower of Christ, and be sent forth by the Holy Spirit. St. John offers the following faith formation opportunities:

Sunday School:  St. John offers YEAR-ROUND Sunday school each Sunday morning at 9:00 A.M. The Sunday school hour begins with Opening Music and Prayer Time in the choir room. All classes gather for the Sunday school opening, which lasts about 15 minutes. Then, participants go to their classes. We currently have three (3) Sunday school classes:

1) an Adult class, facilitated by various adult leaders.

2) a 'One-Room Schoolhouse' class, made up of children ages six through 12, taught by Rachel Lutz, Arlene Gutapfel, and Deysi Oehlman.

3) a Teen class, made up of teens aged 13-18, taught by Heath Hopkins and Nathan Oehlman.

Confirmation:  See the 'Confirmation' link at the top of our home page.

'Women of the ELCA' Bible Study:  St. John--Hubbells Women's Group, a chapter of the Women of the ELCA, gathers monthly, on the second Thursday of each month at 1:00 p.m.  for Bible study and a brief business meeting. The Bible study is taken from the monthly magazine of the Women of the ELCA, Gather. For more information, please follow this link:

'Brotherhood' Men's Breakfast & Bible Study:  St. John--Hubbells Men's group, called the 'Brotherhood', has gathered monthly for at least 70 years, when St. John belonged to the American Lutheran Church (ALC), a predecessor body of the current ELCA. The ALC encouraged congregations to form 'Brotherhood' men's groups to gather on Saturday mornings for breakfast, Bible study, & fellowship. The 'Brotherhood' at St. John--Hubbells is the only 'Brotherhood' group that still meets in southeast Indiana. The men gather on the second Saturday of each month at 7:30 a.m. in the church kitchen. Men take turns each month cooking breakfast. The Bible study is led by the pastor and covers the lectionary readings for the upcoming Sunday. For a link to the weekly readings, please follow this link: A brief business meeting follows each Bible study.

'Luther League' Youth Group:  St. John's youth group, called 'Luther League', is made up of teens aged 13-18. The youth group gathers periodically for a time of worship, Bible study & discussion, & fellowship. The youth group also participates in service projects and mission trips. Luther League also has a big role in the worship life of the congregation:  every 2nd Sunday of the month, the youth leads much of the worship service and music. 'Luther League' is led by Heath Hopkins and Joe Cash.

Advent & Lenten Learning Series:  During Advent (between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve) and Lent (Ash Wednesday through 'Holy Week'--the week before Easter) the congregation gathers during the week on an evening to learn more about an aspect of our faith and spirituality. Recent Advent/Lenten series have included watching popular movies and discussing themes from the movie, a Bible study  based upon a particular theme, and a power-point presentation about life in 1st Century Judea & Galilee--to name a few. After a time of lecture (or viewing a movie), conversation, and discussion, the evening concludes with worship. Be sure to click on the 'Calendar' link on our website, or check the announcements on our home page to find out when upcoming Advent/Lenten Learning Series events are coming!
